Community Worker - Sandy Meloy

Sandy works full time for Kerrier On Track. Current projects that Sandy is involved with are below:

- Massage In Schools Programme - the four Kerrier On Track Schools have all been offerred and had at least one class trained in the MISP. Kerrier On Track have funded 1 member of staff from each school to become a MISP instructor to help sustain the project in the schools.

- School Council Project - This project is a county wide project and is a 4 session programme. The programme includes teaching about Children's Rights, listening schools, Democracy, Committee Skills, Manifestos and hustings which then leads an election of the school council members. Once the school councillors have been elected, the worker helps the link teacher set up the meetings and train the children to take the officer positions.

- Promoting Active Democracy Loudly (PADL) - This is a countywide project working in partnership with Cornwall Healthy Schools and is an award scheme for primary schools to get recognition for their school council. There are 3 levels, gold, silver and bronze, and each award has a specific criteria. There are a few schools across the county that have children trained to assess schools for the award. - Key Steps Programme - This is a programme bought from ASDAN. The programme is run in curriculum time for small groups in year 7 & 8. Currently key steps is run in years 7 & 8 at Humphry Davy School, Penzance and year 7 at Pool School in Redruth. The students learn about anger management, life skills, team working, improve school attendance, friendship building, improve self-esteem, confidence
and improved co-operation between pupils and staff. These skills are learnt through completing the ASDAN modules towards certification at the end of the academic year.
- Combat Club - This is a 6 week programme aimed at year 7 & 8 students. The aims are to help students recognise stress and have coping mechanisms to hand to help to relieve stress. It is also about having a healthy lifestyle, keeping fit and eating healthily. Currently running at Humphry Davy school in Penzance.

- School Health Drop In - This is a service set up in Pool School where any pupil from the school can drop in on a Thursday lunchtime to get advice on any health issues from being stressed to help stopping smoking. Sandy is a stop smoking advisor for the Stop Smoking Service. There is also an email service where any pupil can email me and I can give advice through email.

- Passport to Sport Scheme - Kerrier On Track work in partnership with Carn Brea Leisure Centre to run this scheme. Any child aged between 4yrs and 12 yrs whose family is on benefits and live in TR14, TR15 or TR16 can get a passport to sport from Carn Brea Leisure Centre. This entitles the child to free access to sport and leisure at the Leisure Centre.

- EEFO Evaluators - There are a group of 9 young people who go in pairs to EEFO kitemarked services and assess whether they think the services are young person friendly.

- Cornwall Children's Fund Evaluators - This is a service where young people have been trained to evaluate children's fund services. They look at the environment, location and facilities, the relationships, the actual activities undertaken and the actual aims of the project. The young evaluators interview participants and staff and a report is written highlighting good practice and recomendations. If you would like a group of children to evaluate your service cal Sandy.
- Children as Recruiters and Selectors - There are a team of children who have been trained to interview and recruit adult members of staff. If you would like a group of children to take part in the recruitment process for your agency just call Sandy on 01209 711927 for more information.
